A well-executed design can be exactly what a business needs to spark renewed interest from the community. For businesses facing a decline in foot traffic, it may be time to partner with a reputable design firm to reimagine their space. This was the case for Lone Light Coffee, a beloved local coffee shop in Charlottesville. When a key partner, The Pie Chest, unexpectedly decided to close their doors, it set the stage for a major transformation at Lone Light Coffee.

Seeing an opportunity the owner of Lone Light had long envisioned, the coffee shop took this as a chance to revamp its space. With The Pie Chest leaving, the time was right for Lone light to really create a home of their own in the formerly shared space. They spoke with Lamplight Design Studios and embarked on a renovation that would better reflect the coffee shop’s branding and vision. As a result, Lone Light Coffee evolved into a standout destination on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, offering both great coffee and a vibrant space for the community to gather.

What started as a small coffee shop with just three tables and a lot of noise was completely transformed into an inviting, modern space. With tables for eating and working, bar seating for small groups and singles to take a moment and chat, and a couch area to relax with friends, the seating capacity tripled. The result is a coffee shop that offers a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, whether they’re stopping in for a quick cup of coffee, meeting friends, or spending the afternoon studying in downtown Charlottesville.

It’s incredible what can be achieved through thoughtful design, especially in a limited space. With the help of a skilled design team, even the smallest areas can be transformed into functional, aesthetically pleasing environments that cater to the needs of the community.

The designers noted the noise and incorporated acoustic paneling in their design, to help dampen the sound. Regardless of the time of day you stop into Lone Light, it is always filled with people, and there's usually a line of people waiting to order, but the noise level is low. This is one of the many thoughtful areas about the new design.

With a new ambiance and increased seating the shop is much more inviting and modern. The "Japandi" feel is a comfortable and clean look with dark colors to ground the space. The community has not only embraced the new look but has complimented the owner on the new aesthetic many times in the months since it has reopened.

Even though The Pie Chest moved on, Lone Light Coffee didn’t lose business. Instead, they embraced this change as an opportunity for a fresh start and a redesigned space. By viewing the transition as a chance to revitalize the coffee shop, they were able to create a more inviting atmosphere that attracted new customers while retaining their loyal regulars who once came for both pie and coffee.

Today, Lone Light Coffee stands as a much more successful and thriving coffee shop on Charlottesville's Downtown Mall. The redesign not only strengthened their community ties but also helped them expand their customer base, making it a go-to destination on the Downtown Mall for locals and visitors alike.
